Marbled Homemade Dough Gift Tags (or Ornaments)

It may be a little late for Christmas but you can just say you are ahead of the game for Valentines day! Make these as Valentines or use them to tie on gifts all year round! They are simple to make with inexpensive ingredients!

Air Dry Clay

2 cups baking soda

1 cup cornstarch

1 1/4 cups water

cookie cutters

food dye

parchment paper

letter stamps from amazon

Combine all ingredients in a pot over medium heat.

Stir continuously until it thickens.

Think scrambled eggs...this is how it will thicken up, a glob at a time the way eggs would. Once all of the liquid has globbed up, remove from heat.

At this point add 2-3 drops of dye and fold the dough over itself.  If you over mix it, it won't be marbled, just colored.

As soon as it's cool enough to handle, roll it out on parchment paper and cut out shapes, punch a hole for tying. Immediately mash the scraps together and roll it again and repeat until all of the dough is used up.  This is important because the cooler the dough gets, the less it likes to be rolled out and the more it will crack. As you cut out your shapes, and add a hole , lay on more parchment paper. As you transfer them you can smooth any edges with your finger and gentle patting.

However, it doesn't mind being stamped once it's cut out and cooler.  After you've cut them all out stamp with word or phrases of your choice then move to a cookie rack to harden for 1-2 days.

You can add paint or glitter once they are dry!

Here's a technique to get rounded edges for a smoother look, add a layer of cling wrap between the dough and cutter, press and remove!

Have fun making these and spreading some Love!

38 Great Christmas Books for Kids! 2020 Version!

Hello!

Welcome to the 2020 updated list of Christmas books.  When the boys were younger, I tried to match their new book for the year to their ages or interests.  Now that they are 14 and 11, that's a little tricky. Now I just try to find a beautiful classic or a nicely illustrated one instead. This year I was pleasantly surprised to find a pair of Covid 19 themed books which I think are a hilariously perfect way to commemorate a crazy year. Plus I found a beautifully illustrated Jesus story.

Enjoy the list!

We don't keep them out year round, they get stored away with our Christmas decorations and I write the year and their name in each one so that ONE DAY, they can be passed down to their kids.

Please pick and choose at your discretion, while I think they are all awesome, every family is different. :) Enjoy! They are each linked below!

Snowman Dryer Ball Ornaments

How cute are these?! SO cute.  I started with a tutorial I found at Kelle Hampton and then made it my own! You can check out both ways and then do what you want! Kelle's is a bit easier maybe, definitely less steps and glue! Hers is probably more kid friendly too.

Here are the dryer balls I used.

Here are the noses I used. Yes, 200 in a pack.  Maybe plan to make these with friends?  Also poke around in craft shops, you could find something else that works like buttons or pipe cleaners.

You'll also need a glue gun and glue,
paint (black and pink)
needle and thick thread
wool pom poms from Benzie
I accessorized them with holly sprigs I had (from Hobby Lobby) and bows made from ribbon.

Start by putting the sock on your dryer ball like you would a hat. Note where the sock would come together at the crown of the head, like a beanie.

Now this is where we change from how Kelle made hers...

Then remove it, flip the sock inside out and tie off at the same spot you noted at the crown. Tie it off as tightly as you are able.

Cut off the excess close to wear you tied off but not too close, about 1/4in should do the trick.

Coat the cut off knot with hot glue, get all the now loose ends coated.

Place the hot glues spot back on the crown of the "head" and flip it right side out back onto the snowman. Press the glued spot into the ball and hold for a few seconds.

Glue on a wool pom pom using a small dab of glue and smushing it into the crown (where the knot is). (Note where I added a hanger too for later)

Once the glue has set, we will glue the edges of the hat in place.  Doing a small area at a time, flip the brim up, add a line of glue, flip back down and continue around the whole dryer ball.  Be sure not to add too much and keep it closer to the crown of the head than the face so the glue doesn't show.

Using an awl, pre-poke a hole where you want your nose, add a small dab of hot glue and glue the nose in place.

Starting with the cheeks, paint the face on. For the cheeks, dab your brush in pink paint and wipe most of it off on your pallet (I use a paper plate), Then wipe the brush onto the cheeks like you would blush (at least this is what TV tells me, I have never worn blush in my life). You don't need much.
Then make the eyes and smile. Dab the handle end of the brush into the paint to make the small circles.

If you get little painted hairs like you can see above, allow them to dry all the way, then trim with scissors. This way you won't smudge the paint. I basically ran the scissors along the painted parts parallel with the ball and gave them a good "shave" to clean them up a bit.

Allow them to dry and then using a thick thread like embroidery thread or yarn, add a string hanger.  Try on one first without tying it to make sure you have a good balance and the face will hang properly and not looking too far down or up.

That's it! Simple, cute and easy! Someone even mentioned dabbing them with peppermint which would be a cute little touch if gifting these. :)

Virtual Cookie Swap (A Round-up of the Community's Favorite Cookie Recipes).

This year is weird, right? We can't gather like we normally do at Christmas. No cookie swaps or parties but that doesn't mean we can't have excellent baked goods or try new recipes! This year I hope to make several varieties of cookies and spend an evening with my family, driving around, looking at lights and dropping parcels of cookies on friend's porches. So....I've asked my community on Instagram to send me their favorite, tried and true cookie recipes. I hope to keep adding to this list, so please keep coming back to check!

Here's a couple links from Megan:

Martha Stewart Inspired Putz House Wreath (on a normal person's budget)

I have loved this wreath from Martha Stewart for a couple of years now and despite this article claiming that putz houses are "easy to find", I have not found that to be true. I finally decided to figure out how to make my own. While I made mine using a cricut file, there is an abundance of tiny houses available pre-made that you can easily get your hands on and decorate. I've linked all the supplies needed at the bottom.

I did everything assembly line style...one day I cut the houses out, the next day I glued them, the next I attached to squares of cardboard, etc...
I used thick craft glue to glue down trees and deer after the houses were attached.

Then added faux snow and glitter. Make sure you cover the edges of your cardboard bases.

Once I was ready to assemble, I fluffed the wreath up and nestled the houses in where I wanted them to go.  I thought gluing them in place would be tricky, but once I had a layout that I likes, I ran a bead of hot glue along the back edge of the cardboard and a big dot at the roofline at the back and nestled them back into their spots.  Then, when I went back to add the snowdrifts I put hot glue on the bottom of the house to make sure the snow would stick there and cover the exposed bottoms. It worked pretty well.

Then I went back in and fluffed some more and added a string of battery operated lights I got from Target.

Once I got all the houses and trees glued in, I hung it up. I then used the remainder of my faux snow to frost the wreath a bit. Be sure to use your brush and get into the depths of the wreath to add some dimension.

The wreath base is from Micheals. Find it HERE
Faux Snow paint found HERE.
Etsy shop for Cricut house file HERE
Mini Deer found HERE
If you don't have a Cricut or other cutting machine, HERE is a link to several already made varieties that you can paint and decorate too!

You will also need bottle brush trees in a variety of sizes, fluff of some sort for snow drifts, clear/white glitter, thick white craft glue, cardboard squares for bases and a wreath hanger.

Plan to make one over several days...unless your life allows you several hours of craft time in a row. :)

From plant to pollinator (egg to butterfly)

Hello!
We've been conducting a fun "experiment" in our house thanks to a friend...we've been the temporary stewards of three cute little caterpillars! It's been so fun to watch them go from tiny eggs to a new butterfly! Thought I'd share the whole process here in case you'd like to see it!

Here's about how they came to us. Just cute little fellas, ready to to their thing. Within a day or so we had this...
Here he is in his J formation...ready for action.
And seemingly moments later, here he is.
Here is the progression from where he started until about two weeks later...
And here he is on the day he hatched...about 24 hours after the last chrysalis above.

And there he goes. Amazing to watch the process up so close and see a real miracle in action.  We can't wait to do it again next year!  I've ordered some milkweed to grow in our yard and hope to grow some fennel as well to attract a different type of butterfly.

If you go to my feed on instagram at @littlebitfunky, you can see videos of the change from caterpillar to chrysalis too!

James 3:13

James 3:13 - “True wisdom may be known by the meekness of the spirit and temper. Those who live in malice, envy, and contention, live in confusion; and are liable to be provoked and hurried to any evil work. Such wisdom comes not down from above, but springs up from earthly principles, acts on earthly motives, and is intent on serving earthly purposes.” -MH. We know these people when we see them right? Those who have traded Heavenly purposes for earthly ones. It seems the world has a large population that currently confuses God’s realm for man. That puts manmade structures and ways on the same levels of the Lord’s. That believes that “if you are a Christian”...you vote for x, you stand for a flag, you hold an anthem as dear as scripture, you do what is expected of you by man.  These are a fog the enemy has released on the world. A golden calf for our day. We want something to worship that we can SEE and thereby fall into a trap as old as time.  The thing is, living well, wisely and humbly is something we show the world with our day to day life. With our consistency. With our actions and words when we think no one is looking. If our beliefs and outspoken words are cookie cutter and predictable, it’s likely not the Holy Spirit guiding us. We are called to live in this world but not be OF it. The Holy Spirit should be our only guide and honestly I think it should call us to be wildly different than the world around us. We should not fit into a near category nor try to put others in one. We should see ALL as God’s children and not put them into categories like “legal”, “criminal”, “democrat”, etc. We are called to lives of love and not judgment. And one day, we will have to give an account of that calling. Wisdom in earthly ways will have no pull. #lbfdevo

A quick Cricut project...personalized water bottles!

This was a simple and quick project that I thought I'd share here because they turned out so cute! I started out making one for a birthday boy...then his brother...then realized a cousin would be around, then two more cousins...and my own kids needed one, right? Of course Moses only wanted an M on his but I still like how it turned out!

These are $6 water bottles from Target, vinyl from Cricut and the fonts were free on DaFont.com.

The girly heart font is called Lova Bear, I think it's SO cute!!  The boyish sport font is called SF Sports Night.

One of my favorite parts of the Cricut Maker that I bought in December is the ability to find and load free fonts to the system.  Makes it super easy to personalize anything and everything with fonts I LOVE and for free!

I love how they turned out. SO fun and SO cute!!
