Matthew 18:12-14

Matthew 18:12-14 - I saw this illustration as an explanation of the Black Lives Matter movement for the first time yesterday and I don’t think I’ll ever look at it the same way again.

Jesus is not saying the 99 sheep don’t matter, He is saying the 1 is in danger so He is going after them. The safety of white men and women has never been in question but it’s been a reality for our black brothers and sisters for all of their existence.

It’s not surprising that we are here either.

Attitude starts at the top and trickles down. We have leaders in place who know the language and games of race and play them well. Fires have been fueled purposely. Lord help them on the day of reckoning.

Pursuing peace and unity is a biblical requirement if we claim Christ as our Lord and Savior. Jesus Himself did not stand by when the powers that be mistreated those they governed.

Is He not our example?

We have reached a tipping point where it is not simply enough to not be racist, we must take an active part in dismantling the racism that our country is built on. We must pursue education and understanding of circumstances that we (as white people) will never understand.

But God has not called us to understand. Having a shared experience is not a precursor to becoming an ally. All that is required really is the recognition that privileges come with white skin and disadvantages come with brown.

That’s the simple state of complex things.

I have gotten so many encouraging messages from folks who are seeking to learn and grow and do better. We won’t always do it well or perfectly but if we stay humble and open, we will make progress.

It’s required work if we are pursuing the Father’s heart.

We may not be able to change the world on our own but we can change our circle. I know many will claim they are tired of hearing about race but imagine if it was predominant factor in how you were treated your whole life?

If you find yourself defensive and needing to rationalize, don’t. Sit with it and force yourself to listen to voices of color and what they are saying. Don’t center yourself in conversations of race. Don’t explain or justify. Listen
