DIY Botanical Art (For as Little as $3!)

Recently we finally decorated our bedroom, it wasn't even really a re-do because we have never, in our 13 years of marriage, took the time to really do it up right. So glad we finally did!! The initial effort went into painting the room, clearing out anything we didn't love and getting a few things that we did! Once it was "done" to that point I still really wanted something for above our bed.  There was just the perfect space for a monstera art of some sort.

My giant Monstera is one of my favorite plants in my house.  I recently trimmed off some of its wayward branches in an effort to train it to grow in a certain way.  So I had this pile of giant and beautiful Monstera leaves sitting outside of my back door.  One day it just hit me, I could use one as a stencil to make my own art for above my bed.  The rest is history and now hanging above my bed!  Want to make one? It's pretty simple and only cost me $3 for the plywood I had to buy!
I bought a 2 by 2ft piece of the cheapest plywood at Lowe's. I laid my monstera leaf on top of it.  Side note: I have seen some fake monstera leave for sale at Micheal's or Hobby Lobby.  If you don't have a real one you could probably get a fake for cheap OR go for a hike and look at the trees and plants in a different way.  I bet you could find something for free that would work for this project!
Next, I just spray painted the whole thing, treating the leaf like a stencil.  I made sure to cover the exposed wood well and then left it to dry.
This is what I was left with.  I did end up touching it up a little with some paint to crisp up the edges a bit.
Next I made a simple frame from wood I already had.  I just measured the sides of my plywood and made a frame to match. If you look closely you can see some "cleats" I glued in place so that when I popped my plywood in there, it would stay level inside the frame. I then painted the frame and sanded it down.
Next, I sanded the plywood and stained the whole thing. I let it dry then popped it into my new frame!
I attached a hanger and up it went above the bed! I love it and it was just what I wanted! Bonus that it came from my very own favorite plant!

I hope this inspires you to look around and see what you can use of what you already have around you to fill a space you'd like to fill!
