a healthy holiday {and a little spending money too -win $100}

When do you define "the holidays" as starting?  Is it Halloween? Is it the first trip to the pumpkin patch?  Or Thanksgiving?  Now that I have kids in school it feels like "the holidays" start with the school year.  A change in schedule and rhythm of the day and week kind of spark us into a whole new direction, totally different from the lazy summer days we were just getting used to enjoying.  "The holidays" means dinners and parties, visiting and traveling, sharing and giving.  Sharing and giving everything.  Including germs.
My kids and family are sick more from September through December than any other time of the year combined.  As my kids get older we learn more and more to "beat" the germs at their own game.  As much as we try to incorporate "please" and "thank you" we try to incorporate sneezing in the elbow and washing hands. We also drag them in for all their shots as needed, including the flu vaccine!   All of these little acts of germ defense add up you know and we have seen improved results every year!

My boys are also getting old enough to make some real contributions around the house in terms of cleaning.  With my oldest being seven and my youngest being four we have found that the easiest way to get the job done is by using Clorox disinfecting wipes!  We don't have to worry about spraying or using up paper towels since the wipes are ready to go! Clorox makes it easy to tame the germs as people cycle in and out of our house for the holidays!  Less germs: less sickness: more holiday fun!

I'm also in the habit of carrying travel packs of wipes in the car, giving the handles a good wipe down here and there.  They are inexpensive enough to keep handy everywhere.  In the car, under every sink and in a cabinet or two.  None of my guys has a good excuse not to pitch in when it comes to keeping everyone healthy!

Kids are germ magnets and it's a full time job to keep them healthy.  With a good diet, exercise and Clorox disinfecting wipes I feel like I have an effective game plan place!

How about you?  Have a trick up your sleeve you'd like to share? How do you stay healthy during the holidays?  Leave me a comment telling me and you'll be entered to win a $100 gift card!

We Sanatize while out and about, but we also have a major handwashing fest we instill when they get off the bus in the afternoon., I won't let them touch anything before they wash

It's a little silly, but we drink orange juice at the first sign of the sniffles. I do the Lysol and washing hands a lot. Sometimes, the germs get you anyway. Thanks for the giveaway! Hope your holiday is germ free. Love the mantle.

One thing we do at our house is NOT get a flu shot. We stopped about 3 years ago and each year we seem to be more healthy. Go figure.....
Also, vitamins all the way around for everyone in the family and a fresh pillowcase every 2-3 nights (every night when fighting a cold or other cooties).
My older daughter used to miss 15-20 school days every year...we are now down to 2 or 3.

We stock up on gummy vitamins and supplements!! And hand washing is a BIG one!!!

My son just started preschool and it seems like he always has a cold :( We practice washing our hands a lot! Also the normal sneezing and coughing into our elbows instead of our hands.

I make an extra effort to cook healthy meals as the weather cools down. It takes some creativity but it is worth it.

I carry my own pen everywhere I go. Whenever I need to sign a receipt, sign in at the school office, et. I know I am not picking up the germs of everyone else who has used the pens provided at those places.

I agree about wiping down doorknobs. I also wipe down cell phones (I've heard they are some of the worst offenders) and remotes, too. We try to put all toothbrushes in the dishwasher to be sanitized when someone gets sick or more often if we remember.

I tried something new for stomach flu that worked amazingly well. My oldest, a high schooler, became sick one morning. I looked online and found that drinking 6-8 oz. of grape juice (NOT cocktail or anything but 100% juice) 3 times per day can help prevent everyone else from contracting it, but you have to start immediately. And it doesn't work if they are already sick. I went to the store immediately and got two bottles. None of her 4 younger siblings or her parents got sick! I kept the routine up for about 2 weeks because it was in the elementary school too at that point. Hope it works for you!

My sister-in-law works at a hospital and she said the flu is a bad one this year. I just got my kids their first flu shots yesterday! I also, almost religiously, wipe down my house with clorox wipes and my son has a kid version of germ-x in his backpack. This is the first year they are in school so I am keeping my fingers crossed! :)

Helena Lemon said...

I make sure I take my vitamins regularly. If I even start feeling a bit off I take an immune booster which is a big shot of vitamin C, zinc, estragolus and other antioxidants.

Keep up our good sleep habits so we don't get run down and catch a cold or the flu. We tend to over eat a bit during the holidays so we stay healthy during the busy holiday season by getting outdoors when the weather is nice to burn off those extra calories and stress.

For me it's all about staying active, not sedentary, and eating as much as I can in the form in which it comes from the earth, meaning I avoid overly processed, packed junk. Adding fresh ingredients together and cooking and baking are some of my favorite things, I just try and get in the kitchen and make things from scratch as often as possible :)

I keep hand sanitizer or package of wipes in the car, and my kids know to grab a squirt or wipe on their way to their seat after a trip to the library, museum, or other "hands on" location. I also teach my kids to keep their hands off their faces as much as possible--it makes a big difference when you don't give germs access to those entry points!

I like Chlorox wipes for both my kitchen and bath. They are the only wipes I use. Truly.

To stay healthy all year round, I make a few things routine in my house.

Good Handwashing and disposable towels. No cloth Towels UNLESS you change every day. We use cloth and change out every day. We also use cloth napkins. :)

No shoes worn in house ever.

Toilet lid is always Closed and then flushed. Nuf said.

Toothbrushes get changed monthly or every other month. Depends if on sale.

We keep the house on the cooler side, and wear long pajamas and slipper socks in fall/winter.

I also air out my house every morning. Fresh air is a must for me. In winter I will crack the door open an inch and leave for about 10-15 min if it's less than 30 degrees out. Otherwise open for about 30 min to an hour.

And no over doing it with the hand sanitizer. The peeps I know that sanitize for every little thing are the ones I notice who are most susceptible to germs. Constant colds, all family members get it, seems to be quarterly or cyclically.

No colds, flu or flu shot in my home. I won't say for how long now (so I don't jinx myself....haha)

Amen.
