Best Buy Review- Num 3-Perfect Portion Scale
If you asked me to make an educated guess as to one of the top contributors to poor heath, my guess would be portion control. Not many seem to have it. I don't, in general, think that food is the enemy. I do, however, think that portion control is a critical element to eating well and being healthy.
I also think that because of the way that food is presented to us in restaurants, often times we are misled as to what proper portion size is. I can't remember the last time I went to a sit-down restaurant and was able to eat all of the food given to me. In my mind, that means it isn't the proper portion size.
We seem to put a priority on value over health as a society. We want A LOT for our money. Sometimes getting a lot, however, may cost us more in the end than we want to pay.
I have never used a food scale like the Perfect Portions - Food Scale with Nutritional Calculator before. I have weighed out ingredients on an old-fashioned scale once or twice. I have also googled nutritional content of a food item here or there. This little scale Best Buy sent me was handy in that you could do both at the same time.
It is really fascinating to see, for a change, what a proper portion looks like. This scale is easy enough to use; you look up the code that corresponds to the food you're eating, punch in its code and instantly you have all sorts of information at your hands -- calories, fat content, sugar, carbs, protein and more.
I had no problems getting it to work as it should. I would have liked to see the ability to search on the device for my item instead of having to look it up in a separate booklet. Having to keep track of another little paper something is my only complaint about this scale.
While I can't see myself using this forever and a day, I do think this will be a good tool to learn what certain sizes should look like and becoming familiar with the nutritional content of them. I think it will also make a good tool to teach my kids the same things.
Would you like a chance to instantly adjust your food's nutritional facts to your portion size with this food scale and nutritional calculator in one? Best Buy and BlogHer are giving me one to give to one of you!

23 sweet friends chimed in...:
I definitely agree that restaurant portion sizes have led to poor health...But I think the biggest contributer is the food industry. Companies are always looking at their profit margin and will try to find ways to make food cheaper by adding more processed foods. This makes the food cost less for us, which makes it more attractive than the healthier more expensive options. Our bodies were not made to handle all this processed foods--and the lack of a healthy lifestyle (due to laziness) aids the poor health even more.
I tweeted!

I think the biggest contributor to poor health is technology. We are so much less active, because we don't have to be. Everything is right there at our fingertips.
I feel that the biggest contributor to poor health is that we are not eating "real food", added to the fact that we are eating way too much of not-real food.
I would say snacking and a lack of time are my biggest problems :(
I think the biggest contributor to poor health is simply ignorance. Too many of us are poorly educated on what our body NEEDS, rather than wants, and have no idea how maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I know that portion sizes are my biggest enemy. I exercise a decent amount, but I would lose a lot more weight if I watched what I eat!
I think the biggest contributer to poor health is the lack of exercise we have. I sit at a computer desk all day at work and I know that has caused some weight issues.
I agree technology has hurt our health since we just don't get outside as much, but I also think that so many don't know how to cook and rely on pre-packaged, pre-made food to feed their families. It's so hard to know what your eating that way.
I would LOVE to win this! As much as I would like one for myself, I would give it to my sister if I were fortunate enough to win! She is trying so extremely hard to live a healthier life and lose weight. I think this scale would be a wonderful help. She has four boys and works full time in the restaurant business. I really think that a busy life style can contribute to poor health because healthy food choices are not readily available and many restort to fast food or dining out because that is all there is time for! My sister is working to improve this by packing her own healthy food and eating it on the go!
I am a HUGE (pun intended) over-portioner. It's something I need to do though to help get myself healthier.
I tweeted, but can't figure out how to get that tweets url. SarahRolf is my twitter name.
I think we are all our own worst enemies. We eat too much, exercise too little and we make excuses for it all. I have no illusions about why I am the way I am-I did it to my self. Coming off my soapbox..I started weight watchers 3 days ago so I could really use this :)
I think one of the contributing factors to poor health is all the snack food around. There are SO many more "snacky" things at the grocery store than even 25 years ago. Too many tempting options-- that are a lot easier to grab and eat
Stop the presses!!!! I gotta have one of these! I am currently tracking all this on caloriecount.com and it is exhausting. So awesome it totals your day as well.
Ok, so I think the biggest contributor to poor health for myself is "eating my issues". I know what is healthy, I know what a correct portion is but I stuff my face anyway. Our society says eat when you're happy! eat when you are sad! eat to celebrate! eat to mourn! For me it's all about channeling those emotions into something constructive.
Not sure if I did this right but tweeted about it here:https://twitter.com/#!/amber51703
I think the biggest contributor to poor health is definitely portion size and lack of exercise. I can stick with a good diet for 2 weeks then little by little get into bad eating habits. This scale looks AWESOME! I try to get my portions down to size but so hard! I'd use this daily!!
for me it's lack of exercise. i just don't take the time.
I think television, or maybe now the internet, are the biggest contributors to a sedentary lifestyle and a lack of fitness. It is so easy to be entertained and informed without moving. It is amazing how much I get done (and how much I am moving around) on the days when I force myself to turn off the computer.
Overall, I honestly think the worst problem when it comes to food is lack of self control: whether we're talking about technology(when it all comes down to it, WE are the ones choosing what/how much to put in our mouths so can we really blame it on advertising and technology?) I dont mean to sound harsh in saying that either because Im right there with the best of em, putting too much into my mouth.
The biggest contributor to poor health is definitely fast food AND house cheap it is. Everyone nowadays is so busy with so much pressure at work + kids that there's not as much time to make a good homecooked meal.

I agree with what a previous commenter posted- the biggest contributor to poor health is lack of self control. Personally, if I had better self control, I would be able to make healthier choices. Not only with food (although that is a huge part of it) but to make the decision to exercise more, or to sit on my butt watching TV or surfing the internet less. Truly healthy people have a much better grasp on self control than those with poor health. Thanks for the chance to win!
