Instead of doing nothin'.

I am making it my mission to do SOMEthing. I am assuming that I am not alone when I confess the following...often I am guilty of doing NOTHING when I could have done something. I manage to talk myself out of doing the little things for others...or for myself for that matter, because I convince myself that it isn't good enough, clever enough, doesn't cost enough...just isn't enough. I began working on changing this thinking before Christmas.
~*~
It started with my Christmas cheer packages. I had wanted to do something like this the year before...and ended up doing nothing because I convinced myself that what would be in the box wasn't enough. But this year I went for it. Most boxes contained little more than some cookies, candy and an ornament or note. Just a little something. I sent to those that I felt like I should. I did not worry myself with not being able to send to everyone. I did what I could. And you know what? God totally showed up in those boxes. I can't tell you how many people told me that their box showed up at the perfect moment, turned their day around or helped them to feel loved just when they needed it. I delighted in that...that I was not missing a God moment. :) It helped me to know that I was growing in an area that God has wanted me to for some time...
~*~
So now...I am making it a life mission to always do SOMEthing instead of nothing. Yes, I may want to cook a fancy meal to take to friends but if all I can do is make some brownies...then I will do that. I may want to make a super amazing gift for a friend's new baby but if all I can do at the time is buy something cute from the store...then I will do that. I may really want to send someone a great birthday gift...but can only think of something small to get...then I will get that something small. I may want to comment on every blog that visits here...but if I can only do a few...then I will do that. :)
SOMEthing is better than nothing.
I am even applying this to stuff I have to do around the house...just today I knew that the bathroom HAD to be cleaned...I did not have the energy for it so I took down all the towels, bathmat, etc and washed and dried those...I did SOMEthing and that feels a whole lot better than doing nothing.
~*~
Have I lost you all yet? Do you do this to yourself too? Do you find yourself wanting to do something but usually end up doing nothing because you feel like it isn't enough? Well, I can tell you that I just started on this new mission and already I can see a change...in me and around me. I am not so quick to dismiss a thought but instead think on it longer to see how I can make it work for me to be able to do SOMEthing. I can "see the change" around me in that those in my life can see/feel/hear/know that I was thinking about them and as a result, know that they are loved.
~*~
After all, doctors don't say..."Well I can't cure everyone, so I won't cure anyone". Missionaries don't say "I can't reach everyone...so I won't try to reach anyone". Right?

So...I want to motivate you to change this...for me to keep changing it, too. So I thought I would host ONE MORE swap before the baby comes. :)

We'll call it the "A little something" swap. :)

ALL you have to do for this swap is buy three things:
A pair (or two)of cozy fun socks (because everyone should have fun socks).
Your favorite hot drink (cocoa, tea, coffee, etc).
A sweet treat.

How about that? Are you up for it? Just a little something to brighten someones day...I hope that it will get us ALL into doing something instead of nothing and get us into a refreshing new habit. :)

To sign up please email me at ricracandpompoms @ gmail.com (No spaces).

I will assign partners NEXT FRIDAY the 16th and you will have a week to get a package in the mail from that date. :)

:) Even if you don't want to swap, as always I would LOVE to hear your thoughts! :)

xoxo

I may sit this swap out, but what an amazing post. I have four little ones, and am always feeling like I spread myself too thin. Trying to be all things to all people and feeling defeated in the process. No good to anyone, least of all my family and myself. And, all too often, do I seem to decide doing NOTHING is the better alternative to doing SOMETHING, and someone, somewhere thinking it just isn't good enough. Thanks for the dose of perspective.

hi crystal. i totally felt like you were channeling me in this post! i frequently do nothing because EVERYTHING is so overwhelming. i'll never clean the whole apartment or put ALL the laundry away or finish the zillion craft projects i have started ... so i do nothing. i end up fretting the day away and then feel horrible for doing nothing. so now, on my days off i try to do just one thing. a little straightening. a little sewing. usually once i get started i get more accomplished than i thought i would. but, yes, i agree ... instead of doing nothing .... let's do SOMEthing! thanks for that!

i will send you an email for the swap!

have a wonderful day!

You're truly amazing. I love how you can put MY thoughts into words. And then to know that someone else feels that way, is even better!

Cheers to you!

Your post is right-on. I always have the best intentions but think 'oh, since I can't do it the special way I hoped, I won't do anything'.
My challenge too: Do SOMEthing.

I'll swap! I'll do SOMEthing & email you now.

Thanks

I agree...just doing something helps. Yesterday my goal was to organize and clean out the kitchen cabinets. I was so unmotivated because I wasnt looking forward to whiping them all down. So I didnt...I just got rid of everything we havent used in the last year and had room for all the food I have planned for meals. It was worth it...even this morning opening my cabinet to get my cereal made me smile a little because it was organized!

guilty right here. i have this amazing knack for making to-do lists that never get accomplished! this is so inspiring to just get a little bit done when i can!

p.s. your post awhile back about your family motto of "do what you have to do, so that you can do what you want to do" has totally transformed my outlook! i haven't yet done something i want to do, but i'm hoping that next week i'll finally get there!

Loved the chocolates and card you sent for my birthday! A little something (especially someone's favorite something) goes a long way!

okay that is a great idea. to do something. I usually don't do anything (exaggeration) because i feel overwhelmed! Then I get so overwhelmed I get upset, yell a little and then clean like a mad woman. Not proud! This sounds like a good thing to adopt to my life too. To Do SOMEthing! THanks

your words... exactly the way i think! wow! oh my word... i can't tell you!
i get paralized with the fear of it not being ALL i want it to be instead of it just BEing! IT is special on it's own... the thought... the action!

you have an amazing gift with your words... the way you share your thoughts... the way you put it together!
i love this idea! soooo great Crystal!

I completely know what you mean and have done the same thing a thousand times. I have a lot of great ideas but they don't mean much if you don't do them. Love you.

My "SOMEthing" that I attempt to do, on a weekly basis, is hand-write notes (sometimes they're even on my handmade cards...wow, imagine that!), to people that are either newly widowed (sooooo many of my precious "older friends" at church lost their spouses this past year....makes me want to cry, just thinking of the numbers....), going through sickness/illnesses, tough times....etc. and then, it's so so so precious, to hear their responses, after they receive the notes. If I wake at night, thinking or dreaming of someone in my life who I haven't had contact w/ in ages....I pray and then, if I have their address, I try to drop them a line, the next day. I never want to go "I should have...wish I had, wish I could've...." Live with no regrets.

Can't wait to dig in, on your blog, some more...found you through my friend BC's on M&B&Baby Makes Three. ;o)

love this post! and i think we can ALL relate!! i started something last fall along these lines. i LOVE to write letters, and receive them. but i just never get to sitting down and writing to ALL the people i want to. so, every day, when my kids go down for naps, i take a few minutes to write ONE letter. to whoever comes to mind that day. it blesses me. i pray it blesses them. it doesn't ALL need to be done - just one letter! :-)

Crystal, remember how I asked who you decide to send the cheer boxes to? :) This post is so good! Obviously I have some of that desire to "do all" in me! I am going to do something today! Thanks! Kelly
